General Practice Medical Services Available

Abbey House General Practice provides a full range of medical advice, treatment and investigations relevant to general practice. In addition to providing treatment for specific and acute illnesses, we offer advice and screening for many medical conditions and provide management of chronic conditions. Cardiovascular (Heart)

ECGs:

Electrical tracing of the heart to assist diagnosis of heart conditions.

24 hour Blood Pressure monitoring:

The practice can provide portable medical equipment which will monitor blood pressures at regular intervals over 24 hours.

Heartwatch Clinic:

The Heartwatch Clinic is run by our Practice Nurse specialist and monitors patients who have been diagnosed with heart disease.

Respiratory (Lungs)

Nebulisers:

Inhaled treatment for acute asthma.

Spirometry:

Full lung function testing.

Skin

Cryotherapy:

Cryotherapy involves removal of skin lesions including warts by freezing with liquid nitrogen.

Diathermy:

Diathermy involves removal of skin lesions using heat.

Minor Surgery

A number of our GPs specialise in minor surgery procedures including removal of minor skin lesions and removal of ingrowing toenails.

Joint Injections

Abbey Medical GPs have experience in injecting painful joints such as shoulder, knee and carpal tunnel for relief of symptoms.

Women’s Health

Well Woman Health Check:

The Abbey Medical Royal Screening service provides full Women’s Health Checks.

Contraception:

Full range of contraceptive options including Mirena and Implanon insertion.

Smear testing:

Abbey House Medical Centre is a participating surgery in the National Cervical Screening Programme.  Patients are advised however that they must have an “invitation letter” from the screening programme before they can attend Abbey House for their smear test.  Please go to www.cervicalcheck.ie or contact 1800 45 45 55 for more information and to register for your free smear.  It is recommended that patients have a smear test every 3 – 5 years from age 25.

Combined Ante Natal Care:

Abbey Medical is a member of the HSE Mother and Child scheme which provides free ante natal checks to expecting mothers, 2 week baby check and 6 weeks checks for mother and baby.

Men’s Health

Well Man Health Check:

The Abbey Medical Royal Screening service provides full Men’s Health Checks.

Health Screening

Abbey Medical provides screening for conditions such as high cholesterol, diabetes and haemochromatosis among others. The Royal Screening services also include a comprehensive screening service in addition to a full medical examination.

Vaccination

Baby Vaccination

The Practice Nurses provide the full standard infant vaccination programme which includes 2, 4 and 6 month (5 in 1 and Hib) vaccinations, MMR and pre school booster. All infant vaccinations are provided free of charge to the patient. BCG vaccinations are provided by community services and not available within the practice.

Travel Vaccination

Abbey Medical is a licensed Yellow Fever Centre and Dr. Marie Scully is a registered member of the Irish Travel Medicine Association. Travel vaccinations available (held on site) include Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio.

Diabetes Watch

The Diabetes Watch Clinic is run by our Practice Nurse specialist and monitors patients who have been diagnosed with diabetes.

STI screening

Abbey Medical provides STI screening for the following conditions; Chlamydia, Trichomonas, Bacterial Vaginosis, Hepatitis B and C, Syphilis and HIV.

Hearing

Our medical audiometry equipment provides full hearing tests for patients. Further testing and fitment of hearing aids can be provide by our consultant audiologist Mr. Derek Lacy

Eye Testing

Abbey Medical provides basic eye testing for driving licence and other purposes. Our consultant ophthalmologist Dr. D. N. Pandeya can provide further extensive eye testing to all patients.
